Back in the day, the number one source of traffic to a website is the search engine. The goal was to be ranked on the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN (yeah, not yet Bing back then) and if you’re site was not on the first page for your target keywords then you’re not going to get much traffic (a.k.a. you’re screwed).
Fast forward a decade and we see Social Media gaining more popularity to such a point that some popular marketers are starting to experiment on ditching SEO altogether and just focus on SMO or Social Media Optimization. The argument being more people are relying on Social Media for information nowadays.
Heck, even Google started Google+ which many of see as Google accepting the fact that social media is not to be ignored.
Here’s a cool info graphic by MDG Advertising that highlights the advantages and disadvantages of both.Based on the infographic above, it seems that social media is good for brand awareness and interacting with people but search is still best if you want people to “take action” such as in lead generation and sales.
