Private Blog Networks – Why Build Them & Why They Work

Just saw a post today in the SEO Organization Philippines Facebook group about a discussion in Google Forums about private blog networks. Basically the guy who posted it in Google Forums reported that he saw a PBN with around 700 sites and how this private network of blogs are ranking and are helping other sites rank as well.

Is it wrong?

Private blog networks are mostly frowned upon in today’s SEO industry. I however don’t see anything wrong with it – provided that they provide quality content. Today, it’s all about quality & unique content. Site’s that don’t provide quality content – may they be PBNs or not – are the problem.

Why build them?

So, why build private blog networks? There can be many reasons why but the main reason why people do it is to have control over backlinks. It’s hard to get quality backlinks nowadays so why not just create a huge number of sites that provide quality content and use them to link to your “more important” sites?

Say NO to garbage content

Is it spammy? My answer to that again is, do you provide quality content? If your content is garbage then your site/s deserve to be booted out of the online universe but if they’re gold (or silver or bronze) then they deserve to stay and be given some sort of value by the search engines.

Think about it

Imagine this scenario:

  • I started a brand new business selling tires online
  • I need online presence so I build a website
  • I optimize for specific keywords but the competition is high
  • I realize I need more sites to link to me (blame Google for that)
  • I try to reach out to webmasters and get a few sites linking back to me
  • I check my rankings but still find no love
  • I decide to build 50 different websites each on a different topic but somewhat related to tires (cars, rims, rubber, engines, etc)
  • On these sites I provided quality content and all of them link back to my main tire business site

Do you see anything evil in that? I don’t. In fact I added value to the net by creating those 50 sites.

The big guys do it (properly)

In my reply to the Facebook post mentioned above, I pointed out that and are more or less PBNs in that they’re owned by one entity (each its own). Then people like you and me create on content on their network – they still own the network although we own the content. Let’s say that 5000 random people on these networks decide to link to just one article, say this article – is there anything wrong with that?

But that’s organic you’d say. How would the search engines know?

So, yes, PBNs are OK but just like any tool, it can be used for good and for bad. It can be used properly or not. What about you? What do you think about PBNs?

Check Number of Website Visitors / Traffic for Free

In SEO, it is wise to know your site’s traffic as well as your competitors which is why it is important to know how to check how much traffic a website gets. There are paid tools out but I like free better. If you really want to know how to find out the traffic of a website, all you need is some creative thinking.

There are many ways to do it but my two favorite ways to see how much traffic a website gets are…

1. SEMRush

My favorite, no need to sign-up and the data you get is just awesome. How to check how many visitors a website gets with SEMRush is as simple as plugging in the site’s domain and gives you loads of data such as traffic volume, keywords, search engine rankings, backlinks and even advertising information.

Test out SEMRush by typing in a site’s URL below:

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); = id; js.src = “”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, “script”, “berush-widget”));

Go ahead and check how much traffic a website gets – especially those that are in your niche.

2. Total Number of Site Comments

If a site is using WordPress then one creative way to see how much traffic a site gets is to post a comment. It’s not 100% accurate but it’ll give you an idea. A typical website will get about 1 comment every 250 visitors. So how do you know how many comments a website has? Simple, post a comment. WordPress sites will typically redirect you to a URL similar to the following when you post a comment:

The part where it says #comment-123456 means you’re the 123,456th commenter on the site.

Note: If a site’s got some fancy javascript coding so that it doesn’t redirect you, all you need to do is to view the source code by right-clicking on your name and clicking “Inspect” (on Google Chrome). You should see HTML code where it says <div id=”comment-123456″>.

Then remove estimated spam comments which is about 75%. So 123456*(1-.75) = 30,864 real comments.

Lastly, divide that by our 1:250 comment to traffic ratio and you get the estimated total traffic the site has received. The final formula is:

( number_of_comment * ( 1 – .75 ) ) / ( 1 / 250 )

So if you’re commenter number 123,456, then we have

( 123,456 * ( 1 – .75 ) ) / ( 1 / 250 ) = 7,716,000 total website traffic

Did that you give a headache? Just stick to SEMRush to check how much traffic a website gets then.

Now you know how to check how much traffic a website gets and you also know how to check how many visitors my website gets (shame on me for what you’ll see).

But then why do you need to know how to check number of visitors to a website. There could be a myriad of reasons. It could just be for SEO, fun, it could be to check the competition so you can rank higher or simply to see if the niche your targeting is worth your time. Enjoy and check how much traffic a website gets.

  3. Create a Facebook Page about the problems/solutions that your product solves
  4. Create 3-5 blog posts every week on your website talking about how your product can solve different problems

Obedience is Non-Negotiable

I recently made a post on Facebook about this same topic hoping to get the thoughts of hundreds of people but I failed. Instead, as of now (14 hours after the Facebook post) it only has 20 likes and 4 comments.

Commenters were my mom, one of my aunts and two friends of mine. 2 of them agreed, 1 disagreed and 1 (my mom) said only if it’s possible to obey.

Before I share my thoughts on this, let me give you a short background. I recently told one of my children this very same thing – that obedience is non-negotiable – and I was pertaining to them (kids) obeying us (parents). Was I being autocratic? Not really. I merely wanted my children to understand what obedience is all about.

One other thing before I continue as I’d like to touch on what my mom said. She said, “If not possible, disagree.” That of course is true, not just because she’s my mom but simply because it’s impractical to obey something that is not possible to obey. If someone commands you to poop gold, then you simply say you can’t and anyone reasonable enough should understand you.

Then of course there’s the question of who’s making the command. Since this entire post stemmed from what I tell my children, let’s just make it clear that the command is coming from someone who has authority over you.

Now, everything else that follows is on the precept that what’s being commanded you is possible to obey and that it’s coming from authority.

The Basics

Should you negotiate obedience? My answer is simply NO. Anyone who says otherwise probably do not understand what obedience means. A quick Google search gives us the following definition.

compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority

Let’s talk about government for a while. If the government says “NO SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES” then you simply should not smoke in public places – no but’s no if’s. If you disobey, you will be penalized.

But then that’s obvious and easy to follow. What if the government tells you that YOU MUST NOT PRACTICE FREEDOM OF SPEECH – do you obey? It really is on you whether you will follow or not but nonetheless obedience remains non-negotiable. If you obey, then you should be fine with the government. If you disobey then of course the government will penalize you for it.

While obedience is non-negotiable nobody can stop you from disobeying at which point you’ll be called DISOBEDIENT.

What about in parent-child relationships? Are children allowed to negotiate their obedience. To be clear, here’s an example of “negotiating obedience”.

Dad: Eat your vegetables.

Son: I will eat my vegetables only if you allow me to watch TV ’til midnight.

There’s no problem yet at this point. The last word of course is Dad’s. If he says yes, then fine. If he says, no then his son as to obey. Now, let’s continue the discussion.

Dad: No

Son: (throws tantrums)

This is where the problem arises. For some reason people under authority tend to think that if their “requests” are not met then they’re being oppressed by the authority above them whether it’s the government, parents, teachers, etc.

Hierarchy of Authority

Now, what if you’re told to “kill” someone. If you’re a hired killer then no problem but well I guess most of you readers out there are not. Should you still obey? Enter the hierarchy of authority. Let’s say your hierarchy of authority is as follows:

  1. God
  2. Parents
  3. Government

The rule is simple – submit to higher authority. If the government tells you to kill, you then check if your parents will allow you to do so. If they say NO, then stop. If they say otherwise, then check with God. Does God allow you to kill?

A command made by a lower authority should only be obeyed IF no higher authority says No.

Now, I think that every person must have his own personal hierarchy of authorities to follow. My list is different from yours. You have full control over this list but I suggest that you stay firm with your hierarchy and only modify it after much meditation and self-deliberation.

Getting Out

Now here’s the best part – you can always choose to leave. Does your work tell you to do things that are in conflict with your hierarchy of authority? Is it bugging you? Then leave. This way you won’t end up being disobedient. It can be hard in certain cases, say the government because it can mean leaving your country.

If you’re non-religious, you can opt-out of anything. If you’re religious then you most likely can’t opt-out of family and God both of which are divinely mandated.

Final Words

In the end, Obedience remains non-negotiable. Either you obey or disobey. You follow or you rebel. If you have a clear hierarchy of authority to follow then good. If you don’t then you must start thinking about it as it’ll make decision-making and life in general easier for you.

You’re still in full control but always remember the consequences of your actions. If you don’t want to obey that one authority above you then leave if possible. If not, then be creative and work things out.

Tip… Don’t Be a Baby. Tantrums and complaining are for babies. The wise find the means to do what they want without disobeying. If you’re wise enough then you know what I mean.

I hope I explained things well. This blog post ain’t enough to express my thoughts but I hope I triggered your mind into thinking.  So, What do you think? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

5 Ways of Using Social Media as a Marketing Tool for Small Businesses

All types of businesses today whether online or offline can certainly benefit from social media marketing which is why many smart small business owners are making good use of sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like as marketing tools.

Here are some ideas on how you can effectively use social media as a marketing tool for your small business.

1. Use social media to increase awareness for your brand

Social media is a very powerful and cheap way to increase awareness for your brand. You can get thousands of eyeballs for a few dollars and gain loyal followers along with it. The technique is to separate your brand from yourself. With Facebook, you do this by creating Facebook pages. If you’re using other social media sites such as Twitter and Pinterest, it’s often better to create a separate account for your business.

2. Engage with your target audience through photos

Text is boring. People like photos. So go ahead and take photos of your products, your office, your staff, your customers, etc and post them online. Social media marketing is not just about selling, it’s about breaking the cold barrier of the computer screen as well so be creative. Take photos of anything that identifies with your brand and create a story around it.

3. Make use of videos to foster a closer relationship with your customers

What’s better than photos? VIDEOS of course. Take a video of you working, of customers buying, of your community, of people saying good things about your brand and product and so on. Upload it to Facebook and YouTube, share it everywhere. Photos satisfy the eye but videos satisfy both eyes and ears. You can also do a live stream so you can interact with your customers in real time.

4. Run simple contests

The thing I like about contests is that it both bring fun into your business and also bring in new customers. Simple Twitter raffle contests can double your following in a short period of time. The secret is to keep it simple. It’s not like you’re doing a game show. You’re simply trying to have fun with your target customers while at the same time making them know about your brand and service.

5. Customer service

Customer service solutions online are expensive and outsourcing to a call center can burn a hole in your pocket especially if you’re just starting out. Encourage your customers to reach out to you through social media if they have questions and/or problems about your product. Just make sure to get back to them in a timely manner.

The benefits of social media marketing in any small business is so great that it’s always a good idea to incorporate it in your business strategy. It’s a very cheap way to build your brand while at the same time earning consumer trust.

7 Pillars For Building A Successful Network Marketing Business

Have you ever asked yourself what makes a top network marketing distributor? I did and as I searched and observed, I ended up with this list of the 7 pillars for building a successful network marketing business.

  1. Proper goal setting. You need to set S.M.A.R.T. goals
  2. Never give up
  3. Training, training, training
  4. Choose a mentor that fits the image of who you want to be
  5. Master the marketing plan
  6. Be a loyal user of your products
  7. Be a great team player

I. Proper Goal Setting

Goals give you direction. One of the top reasons why people fail in practically anything is because they did not set goals. Goal setting should you be your first step to be successful in MLM.

II. Never Give Up

Push yourself to the limits and if you’ve reached your limit, push yourself even more. Winners never give up, only losers do.

III. Training

Repetition is the mother of learning. Be a sponge and absorb all the trainings that your company provides. Don’t get bored with training, in fact attend them repeatedly until you master it.

IV. Choose a Mentor

Find someone that models the person that you want to be. This could be your sponsor or it could be somebody else. Listen to how your chosen mentor does his pitch, makes a follow-up, closes a sale, etc. Copy everything he’s doing and with enough practice, you’ll end up like him or her if not better.

V. Master the Marketing Plan

Network marketing is about “marketing”, duh… Obviously you can’t succeed in MLM if you haven’t mastered your company’s marketing plan. Know it inside and out, forwards, backwards and sidewards. You have to master it so well that you can do it in your sleep.

VI. Use Your Products

Don’t be a hypocrite by selling products that you don’t actually use. Use what you sell and take note of how it has affected your life. Your observations will then become powerful personal testimonies that can convince people to buy your product.

VII. Be a Team Player

MLM is not about you, it’s about your team. The faster your team moves forward, the faster you succeed. This is the beauty of network marketing, you become rich by helping become rich as well.

How to Make a Lot of Fast and Easy Money on the Internet for Free

There are four basic steps in making a lot of fast and easy money on the internet for free. Four steps that you can easily replicate and make a quick buck here and there online and you don’t even need to have your own website.

Note: Do yourself a favor and bookmark this page for your quick reference

Tip: Highly recommended 5th step near the end of this post.

Disclaimer: Results may vary.

Step 1. Choose a Product to Sell

This can be your own product or someone else’s product. It can be a physical product, a digital product (software, ebooks, etc) or a service. Most beginner’s (myself included way back then) opt to sell someone else’s product because it’s there’s just a lot less headache to deal with.

There are tons of sellers online who are looking for “affiliates” to sell their products for them and the best place in my opinion to look for these “affiliate products” is ClickBank. It won’t cost you a penny and signup is pretty fast. They have a huge marketplace of products that you can choose. The best part is that a lot of sellers offer from 50% to 75% commission. Now that’s money!

Do it now, choose your Product:

Step 2. Create a Valuable Giveaway

Selling online is a bit more challenging than traditional face-to-face selling because your target customers don’t actually see you. This means you must have a way to gain their trust and what better way than to give something of value for free?

A couple of things to think about for your free give-away

  1. It must be of real useable relevant value
  2. It must be related to the product you’re selling

The most common and still most effective giveaway is a free eBook. You can write the eBook yourself (8-10 pages is common) or you can have someone do it for you. If you do it yourself or if you know someone with some writing skills who can do it for you, then you’re good to go.

If not, then don’t worry because there’s a bunch of people who’d be willing to create an eBook for you starting at $5.

Do it now, create your freebie:

  • Spend a couple of hours creating your eBook. (Tip it doesn’t have to be perfect)
  • If you don’t have the time or skills, then go and visit Fiverr and have someone else do it for you for as low as $5.

Step 3. Setup Your Automated Freebie Delivery and Sales Machine

Now, this step is crucial. In the world of online sales, capturing your target customer’s email address is very very important. It’s your only point of contact after you give your stuff for free and it’s how you are going to get in touch with them again to sell the product that you’re offering.

This is where you’ll deliver your freebie as an email attachment and also sell your product.

You do this by using an autoresponder service like Mailerlite. Once you have your free account with Mailerlite, you can start adding email messages that automatically gets sent out to those who downloaded your freebie at certain intervals that you specify. It is in these emails that you do the actual selling. Think of it as your personal follow-up assistant.

Confused? Don’t worry, Mailerlite provides easy to follow instructions on how to use their system. It’s very user-friendly.

I usually create three email messages that I once a day right after my target customer signs up to download my freebie.

Email #1 – Delivery of Freebie (as an email attachment) + Short paragraph about the product I’m selling

Email #2 – Features and Benefits of the product I’m selling

Email #3 – Last Call follow-up and/or Straight to the point “You have to really buy this” email

Then, you’ll have to create a “landing page” using Mailerlite’s easy to use drag and drop system. Your landing page should be about your freebie. Again, Mailerlite’s got a great tutorial about this.

Do it now, setup your sales machine:

Step 4. Promote your Landing Page

This is your final step and this is where you’d be focusing your energy at least an hour a day. At this point, you already have a product to sell, a free giveaway, and a system to deliver your freebie and sell your product automatically. All you need to do now is to get the word out.

You have to enjoy this part and let those creative juices come out. The trick is to NOT promote your product. Instead, promote your free giveaway. People like free stuff. All you need to do is share the link of the freebie landing page that you created in Mailerlite. Share it on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, emails, etc.

All you have to do is to get the word out consistently to more people every single day and soon enough you’ll start seeing money pouring in.

Highly Recommended 5th Step

Don’t you wish everything could be easier?

Here’s the truth, anybody can really make a lot of fast and easy money on the internet for free but it’s not as easy as many people think. This is why the best ones hire consultants to avoid wasting time doing trial and error. Hiring a consultant can be expensive but there’s another way – a free way to learn from the pros.

What am I talking about here? Well, I’m talking about Affilorama.

Affilorama is the largest affiliate marketing community and training website on the internet. They’re practically here to help you kiss your day job goodbye!

Why you must run WordPress on PHP 7

Every decent WordPress developer is talking about PHP 7 nowadays mainly because it’s faster, more secure and just overall a lot better than it’s last working predecessor PHP 5.6. It doesn’t matter whether you’re running WordPress on Nginx or Apache, the general consensus is that you have to start thinking about migrating your site to PHP version 7 if you haven’t done so yet.

Good news is that more and more web hosting companies are supporting PHP 7 for WordPress. If not, then you probably should move to a web hosting provider that does so.

There’s a catch though. While WordPress itself will run without problems on the latest and greatest PHP version, chances are your plugins and themes might have some incompatibilities but no problem nonetheless because the guys over at WPEngine created a free PHP 7 Compatibility Checker plugin that will go through your site’s code and check for any incompatibilities.

Once the incompatibilities are found, then you can either contact the plugin / theme developer and ask them to fix it or you can fix it yourself and contribute your fix back to them. Either way, you end up with a better WordPress site.

What are you waiting for? Go download the compatibility checker plugin and start migrating your site over to PHP 7.
