MindMap Your Business

I wish to share with you today a technique used by many business people all over the world. It’s called mind-mapping.

Wikipedia defines a mind map as

a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

Instead of writing down ideas in a linear fashion i.e. on a piece of paper or notepad, mind-mapping allows you to branch out from a central idea in a visual manner making it easier to plan things out. The nice think about mind-mapping is that it’s pretty similar to how your brain works.

With mind-mapping, a list that looks like this:

I am

  • 33 years old
  • married
    • to Evelyn Lopez
    • and have 3 kids
  • male
  • a skilled
    • programmer
    • writer
    • marketer

will now look like this:

Cool huh? Here’s another sample:

Mind mapping can be used in a lot of different ways but first you’ll need a tool. I’d recommend FreeMind – it’s free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. You can also export your mind map to a variety of different formats like PNG, JPEG and even HTML so you can easily share it with your team.

Now get started and map that mind of yours. You’ll be surprised by how much stuff you have in there.

  1. Hi Mike, I absolutely love mindmapping. Years ago when I was at University, I got almost full marks for an essay type exam, because of mind-mapping.

To study for the exam, I divided the whole course into very broad topics. Then, I did a mind map of each of those topics, put lots of color on the maps (on quite large sheets of paper). And, I learned everything by studying those mind maps and adding more and more detail. Eventually, I didn’t need all the detail on the maps, because it came into my mind as soon as I saw the maps.

When I got into the exams, I had so much to write, I filled up a book and requested another. It was quite exciting to know I had so much control over my mind!
